Art Appraisal and Authentication
“From one’s perceptual understanding to rational knowledge... while challenging perspectives, uncovering the truth and authenticity within practices.”
— Xu Bangda
The admiration and value of Chinese art can be understood through two key perceptual processes: authentication and appreciation. These processes complement each other indefinitely. Without a definitive evaluation of an artwork’s authenticity, appreciation remains rooted in personal preference and subjective perception. Yet, through rigorous study and expertise, authentication not only affirms the historical and artistic significance of a piece, but also offers profound cultural insight — inviting deeper engagement with the narrative behind the artwork. In this sense, genuine appreciation can only be cultivated after authentication.
Each authenticated piece of Chinese painting or calligraphy work holds immense cultural and historical value. With the trend of artworks becoming financial assets, professional authentication and valuation are essential aspects in today’s art market. Art authentication has evolved into a discipline grounded in both academic research and scientific methodology. It requires not only knowledge in history, literature and aesthetics but also a seasoned eye of experience.
Our team at Chang He Gallery brings decades of firsthand exposure to authentic works dating back to the Qing dynasty. Combined with rigorous academic training, we have developed a nuanced and reliable approach to authentication. Mr. Ang Tock Kiong, for example, has authenticated works by renowned artists including Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, and Xu Gu.
Our authentication services are internationally recognized. Many of the works we’ve assessed have achieved exceptional results at prestigious auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Recent projects include, a private U.S. collector commissioned a work by Xu Beihong to be authenticated, and we have completed the documentation and authentication of a collection of over 100 fan paintings of the Qing and Modern period.
At Chang He Gallery, we believe that every piece in your collection deserves to be examined with sincerity and integrity. We are committed to revealing and honoring the true value of your artworks, ensuring their legacy endures for generations to come.
